Our Story |  A Mission Born from Compassion

International Health Service of Minnesota (IHS) began with a simple but powerful vision — to bring compassionate healthcare to those who need it most.

In the mid-1970s, Dr. Harold “Knute” Panuska, a Minnesota dentist, felt called to serve the impoverished communities of Honduras. Partnering with fellow dentist Dr. Roger Stubbins of Bemidji, he began traveling to La Ceiba, Honduras, to provide free dental care in cooperation with the Honduran Red Cross (Cruz Roja).
What started as a small dental outreach soon grew into a movement. Joined by Dr. Don Watson and Dr. Chin Arias of La Ceiba, the team expanded their work to the remote region of La Mosquitia, supported by Father John, a local Catholic priest whose parish compound in Puerto Lempira became their base of operations.

Expanding Care and Building Partnerships

As the mission grew, so did the team. Drew Mathews, an anesthetist from Edina, MN, joined Dr. Panuska’s efforts, providing essential anesthesia support for dental and surgical procedures. He worked alongside Jim Alexander, a pharmacist at Fairview Southdale Hospital, who helped supply critical medications and analgesics.

These partnerships laid the groundwork for IHS’s transformation from a dental outreach into a comprehensive medical, surgical, and eye-care mission — reaching hundreds of villages across Honduras.

Key contributors like Dr. Paul Jensen (OB-GYN) and Dan Walker, who maintained hyperbaric chambers for divers with decompression sickness, further expanded IHS’s scope of service.

Behind the scenes, John and Dave Potter of Anchor Scientific (Long Lake, MN) managed logistics — packaging, crating, and shipping supplies aboard Dole container ships bound for Honduras. Their efforts even delivered the first cell-saver machine to La Ceiba, along with x-ray machines and ambulances that became lifelines for local hospitals.

The Heart of IHS: Our Volunteers

Volunteers remain at the heart of everything IHS does. Most find us through word-of-mouth, drawn by stories of purpose and connection. They come from all walks of life — doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, engineers, and everyday people — united by the desire to serve. Their experiences often change them forever.

Many describe their time in Honduras as transformative, saying they return home with a deeper understanding of gratitude, resilience, and shared humanity.

“The strength of IHS has always been its people — volunteers driven by kindness, skill, and purpose.”

Our Work Today

Today, IHS continues to strengthen its partnerships with three Honduran hospitals and the Red Cross in La Ceiba, ensuring that care continues year-round.
Each mission builds upon decades of trust and collaboration, expanding access to medical, dental, and surgical services in communities that need them most.

From humble beginnings to international outreach, our mission remains the same — to serve with compassion, integrity, and hope.
