Mission Highlights

Rus Rus is a village 60 miles down a winding dirt road from PLP. The clinic in this area serves patients from many small villages in the mountains of Nicaragua.

Puerto Lempira (PLP) is the capital of the Gracias Adios department (state). It may not look like it but it has nearly 8000 people. Nearly all the locals live in small wooden houses with thatch or tin roofs. PLP has commercial electricity so it is somewhat reliable by Honduran standards.

The Patuca River medical/dental team goes to some of the most remote locations IHS travels.  However, many who go there say it is one of the most rewarding locations they have been to.  Each site along the river is a bit different but many things are similar enough for the team to prepare for their work ahead of time. 

Although I had heard all about the Honduras mission trips from my Grandma, the reality of my trip was far different than I expected. I mean yes a group of us traveled to the Mosquito Coast and helped the impoverished people and yes I ate rice and beans but thinking about the trip as a whole isn’t the same as living the trip with the details. The details were what really caught me off guard and made for an amazing adventure. It was challenging, but the trip far exceeded my expectations.

The Village of Lisangnipura Lisangnipura is a village 20 miles due south of Puerto Lempira (PLP).  The villages of Tipimona and Auka are close by and are places IHS has gone to before (see map below). Travel to this village is usually on winding dirt roads. Occasionally, travel can be done by small planes but

Gracias is a small city that has commercial power plus cell phone and other communications.  For most of the time the IHS team is only there for morning and evening meals and as a place to sleep.  They may travel to a different small village each work day to do their medical & dental clinic work.  This requires packing all the needed supplies to take with them for that days work.
